Chloe embarked on her exciting trip to Texas on Sunday, May 26, to compete in the World Bench Press Championship. After arriving, she checked into her hotel and had a relaxing evening visiting The Cheesecake Factory.
Monday, May 27, was a busy day filled with preparation. Chloe visited her friends who were also competing and spent time at the athletes’ village at the Eleiko Centre. She signed her name on the athletes’ wall and enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere.
Competition Day
Competition day arrived on Tuesday, May 28. Despite a restless night, Chloe weighed in well below her weight class, allowing her to bulk up with some of her favourite foods – ice-cream and pizza! She warmed up and prepared for her lifts, starting with a comfortable 35 kg to ensure a successful opener. Her first and second lifts went smoothly, but she missed the commands on her third attempt, resulting in a no lift. Despite this setback, Chloe secured first place in her weight class and celebrated by trading T-shirts with an American competitor.
The following day, Wednesday, May 29, Chloe and her dad took a leisurely stroll around downtown Austin, visiting local sights and enjoying the warm weather. It was a much-needed break after the intense competition.
On Thursday, May 30, Chloe had breakfast with the American junior team and later went to the Eleiko Center to train. That evening, she experienced some local culture and cuisine with her dad, visiting popular spots and enjoying the local barbecue.
Saturday was another exciting day as Chloe watched her coach compete and win. The GBR U18 girls’ team was awarded second place overall, and Chloe was named the 11th best U18 female lifter across all weight classes. The day ended with a celebratory banquet featuring live country music and line dancing.
Before flying home, Chloe visited Walmart to pick up some souvenirs and snacks for friends. She also made one last stop at The Cheesecake Factory. On Sunday, she embarked on the long flight back, reflecting on an unforgettable experience at the World Bench Press Championship.
Congratulations to Chloe for maintaining her English Bench record of lifting 50.5 kilos.
I AM NOW A WORLD CHAMPION. I never would have believed it if you told me this last summer stepping foot in a gym for the first time, or if you told me in January entering my first ever powerlifting meet. Even me last week in the school common room, joking to everyone that I would just try my best to win some shiny medal. It feels unreal to be a World Champion.
