At St Joseph’s, no child ‘gets lost’ in the middle; all abilities are supported and nurtured equally. This can be seen throughout the College, whether in the classroom or in the swimming pool.
Pupils in the Prep School start swimming lessons in Year 1 at our on-site swimming pool and, from this early age, we encourage sport for all by tailoring the teaching to the varying abilities within a class.
There are four qualified swimming teachers present, which enables the class to be split into small groups based on ability. This allows teachers to focus on progressing the pupils’ skills, at their pace, no matter what level they are at. Whether this is building confidence, developing aquatic skills or teaching and correcting proper technique.
The activities undertaken by each ability group are similar in practice, but simply adjusted for ability, which helps provide consistency across the class. For pupils who progress quickly and for more advanced swimmers, we are able to provide activities that will help them stay engaged and continue to grow their confidence and capabilities in the water.
This example of inclusivity and sport for all approach can be seen throughout the College and is something we are extremely proud to provide.
