We were delighted to welcome back the ‘Surplus to Purpose’ team recently. ‘Surplus to Purpose’ provides meals for those in need from left over ingredients, which would otherwise be destined for landfill.
All the meals served in the dining hall during the day including chicken pie, tomato soup and muffins, contained ingredients which ‘Surplus to Purpose’ had prevented going to landfill, highlighting that ‘best before’ dated food may still be eaten and taste delicious.
Chef Dean was on hand to raise awareness and encouraged pupils to talk about the issue of food waste. Pupils were very pleased to be treated to crisps and fruit juice pouches that would otherwise have been thrown away.
Feedback from the pupils on the initiative was positive and the food met with approval as there many empty plates.
“The food tastes good, the pie is really good .” Vineth, Year 7
“The food is really tasty and it is really good we are not wasting it. There is too much food waste.” Tilly and Reet, Year 10
Joining the ‘Surplus to Purpose’ campaign has been the College’s first step to becoming a school which is ‘sustainable in food’.
Following on with the sustainability theme, the College is also introducing a new composting system for food waste from around College which will then be used to feed the College garden.
