St Joseph’s new student leadership team are aiming to unite the whole College through a collective focus on sustainability this year.
To launch the project, they invited back alumna Emily, who is studying Geography at the University of Birmingham. Emily led lively assemblies for both Prep and Senior pupils on the topic of sustainability, which really helped to inspire a sense of climate responsibility amongst the students.
Senior pupils heard about Emily’s fantastic work in this area, such as campaigning with CAFOD at COP26, and Prep children took part in an interactive recycling activity. The students were left to think about lots of things they could do to play their part.
One of the areas of focus is food waste. The Sixth Formers have run a competition for Prep children where they were asked to design a poster highlighting food waste issues. They were very impressed with the quality of entries and would like to congratulate Sparsh in Year 5 for his winning design. His work, and the posters of the runners-up, will be displayed around the College to raise awareness.
The student leadership team would like to work with the new St Joseph’s garden space where the ” We Grow, You Grow” gardening programme is underway. They will also be looking to get involved with campaigns being led by the University of Reading and support the work that is being done by the College Eco-Committee.
The Head Students hope to be able to put together a College sustainability policy by the end of their time in their positions. We look forward to sharing more sustainability news throughout this year!
