A Level and GCSE Music students St Joseph’s College are delighted to have been set the exciting challenge of composing a school song for Kidmore End Primary School in Kidmore End, South Oxfordshire.
Today, we welcomed Headteacher Mr Griffin, Music teacher Mrs Thomas and 10 pupils from Year 2 to Year 6 to our Yamaha composition suite for a workshop to kick off the creative thinking process.
Led by Mr Kesel, our composer in residence, the group discussed initial ideas for the song. The pupils talked about the ‘mind maps’ they had worked on before half-term, the values that were important to them, such as friendship, respect and kindness, and the type of song they wanted.
They all agreed it should be happy and upbeat, not too long and have a catchy chorus. Our St Joseph’s students took all of this helpful guidance on board and will set to work immediately!
Laura Stotesbury, Head of St Joseph’s said: “When I met Mr Griffin for the first time and he set us the challenge of composing Kidmore End’s school song, I accepted with enthusiasm and a little trepidation as it is such an honour and a responsibility! However, our GCSE and A Level Music students leapt at the opportunity and can’t wait to get started on the composition. We look forward to this being the start of a long and mutually beneficial relationship between our schools.”
Mr Griffin, Headteacher of Kidmore End, added: “This is a brilliant opportunity for our School Council to work in partnership with St Joseph’s College. The workshop was inspirational and we cannot wait to hear the music and lyrics for our Kidmore End School Song. We are extremely grateful to students at St Joseph’s who begin on this amazing journey to create a wonderful and memorable legacy for the children of Kidmore End.”.
