Excel, one of our Year 7 students was a runner-up in last year’s First News “Speech Your Mind” competition and recently delivered his powerful speech on children’s mental health at the House of Lords. The event, which brought together nine other winners and runners-up, showcased the voices of young advocates addressing Lords, MPs, and the Children’s Commissioner, Dame Rachel de Souza.
Excel’s heartfelt and eloquent delivery captivated the audience, including Dame Rachel De Souza, who was very impressed. “These speeches were as good as those I hear in Parliament on a daily basis,” she remarked, underscoring the significance of amplifying children’s perspectives.
In his speech, Excel passionately highlighted the challenges children face, from bullying and social media pressures to the toll of academic demands and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Mental health is not just a subject for adults to discuss; it’s a critical concern that affects the well-being and future of our youth,” he declared. His call to action urged adults to prioritize children’s mental health through policies and open conversations.
Excel’s powerful delivery made a lasting impression, earning him a spot on Sky News First News TV, where his speech has been broadcast to a wider audience. The experience not only celebrated Excel’s advocacy but also brought much-needed attention to the importance of supporting children’s mental well-being.
Through his inspiring words, Excel has become a champion for his peers, reminding us all that young voices have the power to ignite change.
