National Science Week 13- 20 March 2023 kicked off in College with an exciting assembly led by our Sixth Formers.
The assembly featured a hidden Asch psychology experiment, an explosion in the Chemistry lab live streamed to College Hall, Newton’s Law demonstrated with melons, flying drones and an all-girl band called the Fluid Fluters who entertained with a tune played on one note water flutes.
Just when we thought the fun was over, a volunteer Year 7 pupil was picked out from the audience to take off and fly across College Hall on a hovercraft complete with dry ice and sound effects!
Following this at lunchtime and in the afternoon, there was ‘Science Quiz Chaos’ in Prep and Senior School as teams battled to score points and show just how much they knew about science.
On Tuesday, over in the science department, a lab had been disguised as a WW2 British Intelligence Training camp. Led by Private Pellenc and Colonel Newsam, a team of top ranked spy trainers put pupils from across College through their paces in order to graduate as fully fledged spies ready for action in the field. They learnt how to make a periscope, sent vital messages via morse code and cracked a code in a (clean) sock. They left ready for action in the field and we may have M15 and M16 on the phone very soon looking for recruits!
Wednesday saw the College Hall become a landing strip for drones as students across the College coded drones and attempted to complete a course to land them safely.
Next up, on Thursday, it was the Catapult Challenge and pupils headed to the Prep Hall and College Hall to build catapults in teams before using them to fire at targets.
The week ended with a cinematic flourish from a Popcorn and STEM cinema event. Pupils were given the chance to enjoy popcorn served by a new catering assistant, Dr Pellenc, and watch science films – ‘Crazy Plants’ with David Attenborough plus ‘Plankton then Pooh’ for the Prep pupils and ‘Big bang and the Universe’ for the Seniors.
What a week of connection!
