Derin has recently completed her A Levels in History, Business, and Philosophy, Ethics & Religion and achieved A, A*, A*. She is delighted to be going to read Law at Girton College, University of Cambridge.
Derin has been at St Joseph’s College since Year 6 and alongside her academic efforts, she has been involved in lots of co-curricular activities such as the hockey, netball and athletics teams and captained the school netball team in Year 9 and 10. In Year 12 Derin was also a CAFOD young leader.
Derin feels the College has been incredibly supportive throughout her time at the College and she has loved her time here. During Year 13, getting ready for Cambridge tests and her A Levels, Derin knew she could go to the teaching staff for support and they were always there to help.
Derin feels grateful to her parents for sending her to St Joseph’s and it has given her a great amount of confidence to be herself and to know that she can go for whatever she wants. She wasn’t too sure about applying to Cambridge and had moments of self-doubt, but she says the College and her family encouraged her and motivated her to give it her best shot and to believe in herself.
With the help of means-tested financial assistance, Derin and her two sisters have attended the College together, something that she has loved.
“By kindly giving us means-tested financial assistance, the College has given me and my family the opportunity to attend the College together and we have been able to access a high degree of learning and support.”
Derin had some advice for other students who might be considering applying to the College:
“I would say one hundred percent apply, no matter your situation or anything like that. The College is so welcoming and so helpful and supportive. I think just speak to them and hear what they have to say before you decide. It is a wonderful opportunity that you definitely shouldn’t miss out on.”
Congratulations Derin – we are so proud of you and wish you all the best!
